Italy’s national team are one of international football’s true heavyweights, representing a country with a rich and storied footballing tradition. The Azzurri have spent much of their history among the world’s elite, winning four FIFA World Cups (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006) and two UEFA European Championships (1968, 2020). Renowned for their tactical intelligence, defensive mastery and effortlessly stylish blue shirts, Italy remain one of the most successful and respected nations in the game.
This remarkable legacy has been shaped by legendary figures such as Paolo Maldini, Roberto Baggio, Andrea Pirlo, Gianluigi Buffon and Alessandro Del Piero.
In 2020, Italy wore a modern interpretation of their iconic Azzurri blue home shirt, combining tradition with contemporary design elements. The kit featured subtle pattern detailing and a tailored, athletic fit, symbolising a new era for the national side as they entered a major international tournament with renewed confidence and identity.
That confidence translated into one of the greatest campaigns in the nation’s history. At EURO 2020, played across 2021, Italy were outstanding from start to finish, winning all three group matches before overcoming Austria, Belgium and Spain in the knockout rounds. The final at Wembley saw the Azzurri face England, where, after a 1–1 draw, Italy triumphed 3–2 on penalties to secure their second European Championship and their first major trophy since 2006.
As of 2026, Italy narrowly missed out on automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup, finishing second behind Erling Haaland’s Norway in their qualifying group. However, the Azzurri still have a route to the tournament via the playoffs, where victories over Northern Ireland and then either Wales or Bosnia & Herzegovina would secure their place - a challenge Italy will fancy themselves to overcome.
