OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE – HOME SHIRT 2006/2007
Marseille are one of France’s heavyweight clubs, based in the south of the country and renowned for their passionate support. OM have spent the vast majority of their history in Ligue 1, winning 11 French league titles, 10 Coupe de France trophies, and 3 Coupes de la Ligue. On the European stage, they remain a landmark club in football history as the first-ever winners of the UEFA Champions League in 1993, defeating AC Milan 1–0 in Munich.
Marseille play their home matches at the iconic Stade Vélodrome, one of Europe’s most intimidating stadiums, where crowds regularly exceed 60,000.
The 2006/2007 season proved to be one of OM’s strongest campaigns of the modern era. Wearing this distinctive home kit during the season, Marseille finished 2nd in Ligue 1, their highest league position since 1999, narrowly behind a dominant Lyon side, who were in the midst of their historic run of seven consecutive titles.
A key figure in this successful league run was Mamadou Niang, who enjoyed the most prolific season of his Marseille career. The Senegalese striker finished as the club’s top scorer with 12 Ligue 1 goals.
The squad was packed with talent and personality. Franck Ribéry was nearing the peak of his powers, providing creativity from the left flank, in what would be his final season before earning a move to Bayern Munich. Samir Nasri, still only 19, continued his rise as one of France’s brightest young midfielders, whilst legendary goalkeeper Fabien Barthez brought experience and authority in goal.
In domestic cup competition, Marseille once again made a deep run in the Coupe de France, reaching the final for the second consecutive season. This time, however, they suffered heartbreak against Sochaux, losing on penalties after a 2–2 draw, narrowly missing out on silverware yet again.
OM were very disappointing in the UEFA Cup. They were eliminated early from the UEFA Cup, losing to Czech side Mladá Boleslav in the first round.
