OLYMPIQUE MARSEILLE - AWAY SHIRT 2007/2008
Olympique de Marseille, or simply OM, are a French professional football club based in Marseille and founded in 1899. The name "Olympique" nods to the ancient Greek games and to the Phocaeans who founded the city 25 centuries earlier — fittingly, the club's nicknames remain Les Phocéens ("The Phocaeans") and Les Olympiens ("The Olympians"). Marseille play at the Stade Vélodrome, their home since 1937, and were the only French side to have won the UEFA Champions League, lifting it in 1993, until PSG's triumph in 2025.
The 2007/2008 season, during which this classy away shirt was worn, was a turbulent but ultimately rewarding campaign. After just one win in nine league matches, head coach Albert Emon was sacked in September and replaced by Belgian Eric Gerets. Under Gerets, OM rallied to finish 3rd in Ligue 1 on 62 points - a long way behind a Lyon side that claimed a seventh straight French title.
In Europe it was a campaign of memorable nights. In the Champions League group, Marseille became the first French side to win at Anfield, beating reigning finalists Liverpool 1-0, only to lose the return 4-0 at the Vélodrome and drop into the UEFA Cup. They saw off Spartak Moscow 3-2 on aggregate in the Round of 32 before going out on away goals to eventual winners Zenit Saint Petersburg in the Round of 16.
Domestically they reached the Coupe de France final, losing 5-4 on penalties to Sochaux after a 2-2 draw.
Senegalese forward Mamadou Niang led the line with 18 Ligue 1 goals, finishing second in the scoring charts and earning the team a return to the Champions League.
