The Netherlands national team are one of international football's most iconic sides, representing a nation whose Total Football philosophy reshaped the modern game. Affectionately known as Oranje, the Dutch are three-time FIFA World Cup runners-up (1974, 1978, 2010) and were European champions at Euro 1988.
This legacy has been shaped by legendary figures such as Johan Cruyff, Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten and Robin van Persie, whose brilliance has defined Dutch football across generations.
The Netherlands wore this striking away shirt at UEFA Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland under manager Marco van Basten. Drawn into a brutal Group C with reigning world champions Italy, France, and Romania, the Dutch shocked the continent with a stunning 3-0 victory over Italy in Bern (Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wesley Sneijder and Giovanni van Bronckhorst with the goals) before thrashing France 4-1 four days later thanks to strikes from Dirk Kuyt, Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Sneijder. With qualification already secured, Van Basten rested his stars in a 2-0 defeat to Romania and Oranje still topped the group on nine points. The dream came crashing down at the quarter-final stage in Basel, however, where former Netherlands manager Guus Hiddink masterminded a stunning 3-1 extra-time victory for Russia, with Andrei Arshavin tormenting the Ducth defence. Van Basten stepped down immediately after the tournament to take charge of Ajax.
As of 2026, the Netherlands are heading to the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, having sealed qualification in November 2025 and been drawn into Group F alongside Japan, Sweden and Tunisia. With a squad led by Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, Real Madrid wing-back Denzel Dumfries and forwards Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo, Oranje travel to North America under returning manager Ronald Koeman, hunting the global title that has eluded them in finals three times before.
