REAL MADRID – HOME SHIRT 2012/2013
Real Madrid is a professional football club based in Spain’s capital, competing in La Liga, the top tier of Spanish football. Founded in 1902 as Madrid Football Club, they were granted the honorific title Real, meaning “Royal”, by King Alfonso XIII in 1920. Since 1947, the club has played its home matches at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu, which has a capacity of over 78,000 spectators.
The club is renowned for its Galácticos philosophy: signing the world’s biggest and most talented stars. This approach has helped cement Real Madrid’s reputation as one of, if not, the biggest and most prestigious clubs in the world.
The squad that wore this classic home shirt was packed with superstars, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká, Mesut Özil, Iker Casillas, Karim Benzema, and Marcelo, to name just a few. They began the 2012/2013 season on a high, winning the Supercopa de España against Barcelona on away goals. In the league, however, they finished as runners-up to Barça, accumulating 85 points - 15 behind their rivals, who achieved a 100-point season.
In Europe, Madrid reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the third consecutive year but were eliminated by Borussia Dortmund, 4-3 on aggregate. In the Copa del Rey, they had a memorable run, defeating Barcelona in the semi-finals - including a commanding 3–1 victory at Camp Nou - before falling to Atlético Madrid 2-1 after extra time in a heated final that saw an astonishing 17 yellow and red cards.
Ultimately, Real Madrid finished the season with just one trophy out of a possible four, despite going reasonably close in them all. Following the Copa del Rey defeat, club president Florentino Pérez announced the departure of José Mourinho at the end of the season by “mutual agreement.”
