AS SAINT-ETIENNE - AWAY SHIRT 2010/2011
AS Saint-Etienne, founded in 1919 by employees of the Casino supermarket chain, are one of the giants of French football. Affectionately known as Les Verts ("The Greens") for their iconic green-and-white kits, the club were the first team to win ten Ligue 1 titles, which they did between 1957 and 1981, and reached the 1976 European Cup final where they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Bayern Munich at Hampden Park. They play their home matches at the cauldron-like Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, known to fans simply as "Le Chaudron".
The 2010/2011 campaign, in which this crisp away shirt was worn, was Christophe Galtier's first full season in charge after taking over mid-way through the previous year and steering the club clear of relegation. Under his stewardship Les Verts finished 10th in Ligue 1 with 49 points (12W-13D-13L) - a comfortable mid-table position that represented steady consolidation after the prior year's survival scrap. The opening day brought a 2-1 defeat at PSG, with Mevlüt Erdinç scoring the first goal of the entire Ligue 1 season against them, but home wins over both Marseille and Lyon, each by 2-1, helped keep their position secure throughout the year.
The domestic cup campaigns offered no deep runs, with Saint-Etienne exiting both the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue without troubling the latter stages - a season in which Lille under Rudi Garcia ultimately lifted both the league title and the Coupe de France.
The standout individual was a 23-year-old Dimitri Payet, who finished as the club's top scorer with 13 league goals. He went on to write his name into Lille, Marseille and eventually into West Ham folklore.
