US Salernitana 1919 are a professional football club based in Salerno in the Campania region of southern Italy. Founded in 1919 - the year that gives the club its full name - Salernitana are known to their devoted following as the Granata ("the Maroons") and play their home games at the Stadio Arechi. The club's supporter base is widely considered one of the most passionate in Italian football, with the rallying cry "Macte Animo, Salernitana" carried across generations.

The 2023/2024 season, during which this distinctive special shirt was worn, was a campaign those passionate supporters will want to forget. After narrowly surviving the previous year, Salernitana finished bottom of Serie A, winning just two of their 35 league matches and conceding relegation on 26 April after a 3–0 defeat to Frosinone - with four games still to play. Their fate was sealed by an extraordinary managerial merry-go-round: Paulo Sousa, Filippo Inzaghi, Fabio Liverani and Stefano Colantuono all took charge in a single season, and none could halt the slide.

The Coppa Italia campaign offered no respite, with an early exit to Sampdoria. Top-scorer honours went to former Lazio winger Antonio Candreva, who finished with six goals in all competitions. Senegalese striker Boulaye Dia, who had been the heartbeat of the previous season's survival, struggled with form and contributed just four.

A season-long collapse from a club that, only twelve months earlier, had thrillingly preserved their Serie A status, the campaign brought the curtain down on a brief but eventful three-season top-flight stay.
