ARSENAL – THIRD SHIRT 2014/2015
Arsenal Football Club are a professional football team based in Islington, North London. They compete in the Premier League, the top tier of English football, and play their home matches at the Emirates Stadium, which holds up to 60,704 supporters. The club are affectionately known as The Gunners, a nickname that dates back to their founding in 1886 by workers at the Royal Arsenal munitions factory in Woolwich. Their fans, Gooners, take their name from an evolution of “Gunners.”
Domestically, Arsenal are one of England’s most decorated clubs. They have won 13 league titles - including their famous unbeaten season - along with a record 14 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, 17 FA Community Shields, and the Football League Centenary Trophy. In Europe, they have lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, though the Champions League has remained elusive. Based on total trophies won, Arsenal rank as the third-most successful club in English football history, behind Manchester United and Liverpool.
This striking third kit was worn during the 2014/2015 season, which was one of Arsene Wenger's final seasons at the club. Arsenal finished 3rd in the Premier League behind Chelsea and Manchester City. Alexis Sánchez, who signed that summer, was outstanding. He finished as the club’s top scorer with 16 league goals and 25 in all competitions. Arsenal won both the FA Cup and the Community Shield, defeating Aston Villa 4–0 and Manchester City 3–0 respectively. Their League Cup run ended in the third round against Southampton.
In Europe, Arsenal reached the Champions League Round of 16 but were eliminated by Monaco on away goals after a 3–3 aggregate draw. Arsenal appeared to have the tie all but wrapped up following a 91st-minute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain goal to put them 3-2 up on aggregate, but Monaco struck back in the 94th minute through Yannick Carrasco, set up by Bernardo Silva, to send the Gunners out of the competition.
