ATHLETIC BILBAO – FOURTH SHIRT 2024/2025
Athletic Bilbao are a historic football club based in the city of Bilbao, in Spain’s Basque Country. Founded in 1898, they are one of only three clubs never to have been relegated from La Liga - alongside Barcelona and Real Madrid. The club is renowned for its unique philosophy of fielding only players who are from - or have been developed within - the Basque Country.
This tradition dates back to the club’s early years, when its squads were made up largely of local players and British workers living in the region. Over time, the “local players only” approach became a defining part of Athletic’s identity. Supporters fiercely embrace this philosophy, seeing it as a symbol of regional pride and authenticity. The club’s consistent success, including their unbroken stay in La Liga, is made even more remarkable by their commitment to homegrown talent.
With the help of Castore, Athletic Club has reaffirmed its commitment to the territory by launching this smart fourth kit that seeks to celebrate and vindicate the roots and identity of the lions.
Athletic play their home matches at the Estadio San Mamés, an impressive stadium with a capacity of 53,331 spectators.
The team wore this fourth shirt during what proved to be a strong season, finishing 4th in La Liga and securing qualification for the Champions League. They reached the semi-finals of the Supercopa de España, where they were defeated by Barcelona, and exited the Copa del Rey in the Round of 16 against Osasuna.
In Europe, Athletic advanced all the way to the semi-finals of the Europa League before being eliminated 7–1 on aggregate by Manchester United, who ultimately went on to lose the final to Tottenham.
