OGC NICE - AWAY SHIRT 2016/2017
OGC Nice are a French football club founded in 1904 and based on the Côte d'Azur, known affectionately as Les Aiglons ("The Eaglets") in tribute to the eagle on the city's coat of arms. Home matches are played at the 36,000-capacity Allianz Riviera in the hills above the Mediterranean, the club's home since 2013. Once one of the great forces of French football with four Ligue 1 titles between 1951 and 1959, Nice spent decades in the shadow of the Paris and Marseille giants before returning to genuine relevance in the mid-2010s.
The 2016/2017 campaign - during which this smart away shirt was worn - was a season to remember on the Riviera. Under new Swiss manager Lucien Favre, Nice led Ligue 1 for long stretches of the autumn and finished third on 78 points, behind champions Monaco and PSG, earning their first taste of UEFA Champions League qualification.
European football in the season itself ended in disappointment, with the Aiglons eliminated at the UEFA Europa League group stage from a tough section containing Schalke 04, Krasnodar and Red Bull Salzburg - but the headline domestically was Favre's transformation of the squad's identity into one of the most exciting pressing sides in France.
The summer's marquee signing had been Italian striker Mario Balotelli, who joined on a free transfer from Liverpool and was unleashed by Favre's high-tempo system to score 17 goals in all competitions - 15 in Ligue 1 - rediscovering the talismanic form of his early career. He was joined in Nice by Brazilian Champions League winner Dante and former Montpellier title-winner Younes Belhanda, with Ivorian midfielder Jean Michael Seri pulling the strings from deep with all-action displays that would soon attract Premier League suitors.
