WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS – AWAY SHIRT 2006/2007
Wolverhampton Wanderers, commonly known as Wolves, are a professional English football club that currently compete in the Premier League. The team plays their home matches at Molineux Stadium, which has a capacity of around 32,000. A founding member of the Football League in 1888, Wolves have been crowned English champions three times - in 1953/54, 1957/58, and 1958/59.
The club has long-standing rivalries with several West Midlands sides, including Aston Villa, Stoke City, and Birmingham City. However, their fiercest rivalry is with West Bromwich Albion, with whom they contest the famous Black Country derby.
This away shirt was worn during the 2006/07 Championship season. It was Wolves’ first season under new manager Mick McCarthy, who replaced Glenn Hoddle, following his sudden resignation in July 2006.
On paper, the season was respectable, with Wolves finishing 5th and qualifying for the play-offs. However, it was also marked by several notable setbacks. They were knocked out of the League Cup at the first hurdle by a struggling League One side, Chesterfield, who were relegated to the fourth tier later that year.
In the FA Cup, Wolves suffered a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to arch-rivals West Bromwich Albion in the third round.
To make matters worse, rivals Birmingham City earned promotion after finishing second in the league. At this point, Wolves' fans were likely thinking things couldn't get much worse - but they could! The play-offs brought further disappointment. Drawn once again against West Brom, Wolves were beaten in both legs of the semi-final, losing 4-2 on aggregate - a very difficult end to a rollercoaster campaign.
