Drawn into Group B alongside reigning world champions Spain, Chile, and Australia, the Dutch opened with an extraordinary 5-1 demolition of the Spanish in Salvador - Robin van Persie's flying header one of the iconic images of the tournament - before topping the group with three wins from three. They edged Mexico 2-1 in a dramatic round of 16 thanks to late goals from Wesley Sneijder and a Klaas-Jan Huntelaar penalty, then beat Costa Rica 4-3 on penalties in the quarter-finals after a goalless draw - Van Gaal famously bringing on goalkeeper Tim Krul specifically for the shoot-out! They fell to Argentina 4-2 on penalties in another scoreless semi-final, before finishing the tournament in style by thrashing hosts Brazil 3-0 in the third-place playoff to land bronze.
As of 2026, the Netherlands are heading to the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. They've been drawn into Group F alongside Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia. With a squad led by Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, Inter wing-back Denzel Dumfries and forwards Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo, Oranje travel to North America under returning manager Ronald Koeman, hunting the global title that has eluded them for so long.
