Italy’s national team are one of international football’s true heavyweights, representing a country with a rich and storied footballing tradition. The Azzurri have spent much of their history among the world’s elite, winning four FIFA World Cups (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006) and two UEFA European Championships (1968, 2020). Renowned for their tactical intelligence, defensive mastery and effortlessly stylish blue shirts, Italy remain one of the most successful and respected nations in the game.

This remarkable legacy has been shaped by legendary figures such as Paolo Maldini, Roberto Baggio, Andrea Pirlo, Gianluigi Buffon and Alessandro Del Piero.

In 2022, Italy wore a refined version of their iconic Azzurri blue home shirt, combining clean design with subtle detailing that reflected both tradition and modern performance. The kit carried the prestige of a reigning European champion side, as Italy entered the year looking to build on their EURO 2020 triumph.

However, the year brought unexpected disappointment. Despite strong performances in qualifying, Italy were forced into the World Cup playoffs, where they suffered a shock 1–0 defeat to North Macedonia, ending their hopes of reaching the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It marked the second consecutive World Cup Italy failed to qualify for, a stark contrast to their historic success.

As of 2026, Italy narrowly missed out on automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup, finishing second behind Erling Haaland’s Norway in their qualifying group. However, the Azzurri still have a route to the tournament via the playoffs, where victories over Northern Ireland and then either Wales or Bosnia & Herzegovina would secure their place - a challenge Italy will fancy themselves to overcome.
