MANCHESTER UNITED - AWAY SHIRT 2023/2024
Manchester United, founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR by railway workers at the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot, are one of the most successful and recognisable clubs in world football. Twenty-time English league champions and three-time European Cup winners, the Red Devils have called Old Trafford - Sir Bobby Charlton's "Theatre of Dreams" - home since 1910. The club's modern identity remains shaped by the 1958 Munich air disaster and Sir Matt Busby's rebuild that culminated in their first European Cup ten years on.
The 2023/2024 season, in which this understated away shirt was worn, was Erik ten Hag's second full campaign in charge and a deeply turbulent one at Old Trafford. United limped to 8th in the Premier League on 60 points - their lowest top-flight finish since 1989/1990 - in a season disrupted by a brutal injury list and the backdrop of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS minority takeover. The Champions League campaign was a disaster: bottom of a group containing Bayern Munich, Galatasaray and Copenhagen, United tumbled out of European football altogether on just four points.
What the season is best remembered for, however, is the FA Cup. United beat Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley on 25 May 2024 to lift the trophy for a 13th time, with teenagers Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo each scoring inside the first half - the first teenagers to score in an FA Cup final since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2004. The Carabao Cup defence ended embarrassingly as the holders were dumped out 3-0 at home by Newcastle.
Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Højlund finished as joint top scorers with 10 Premier League goals each. Højlund, a £72 million summer signing from Atalanta, also netted five times in six Champions League appearances, including a brace against Galatasaray on his European debut. Ten Hag was sacked the following October - the Wembley triumph the lone bright spot of his final full season.
