OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE – HOME SHIRT 2013/2014
Olympique de Marseille remain one of France’s true giants, a club defined by fierce support, a strong identity, and a history that places them among Europe’s most recognisable names. Based in the south of France, OM play their home matches at the iconic Stade Vélodrome, where the atmosphere is regarded as one of the most intimidating in European football.
The 2013/2014 season proved to be a frustrating campaign. Managed by Élie Baup at the outset, Marseille struggled for consistency, leading to his dismissal in December. José Anigo stepped in as interim manager for the remainder of the season, and while performances improved in the second half of the campaign, OM ultimately finished 6th in Ligue 1, narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification.
Club captain Steve Mandanda remained a commanding presence in goal throughout the season. In midfield, Mathieu Valbuena once again served as the creative heartbeat of the side, while a young André Ayew provided energy and goals from advanced positions. The campaign also saw the arrival of Dimitri Payet, whose technical quality and flair began to shine despite the club’s turbulent form. Up front, André-Pierre Gignac was the standout performer, finishing as Marseille’s top goalscorer with 16 league goals and 22 in all competitions.
On the European stage, the season was a harsh one. Marseille endured a historically poor Champions League campaign, finishing bottom of their group without picking up a single point against Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, and Napoli.
Domestic cup competitions offered little respite. OM were eliminated in the Round of 32 of the Coupe de France and reached only the quarter-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue.
Ultimately, the 2013/2014 season in which this smart home shirt was worn proved to be a deeply disappointing one for both Marseille’s players and supporters.
