MARSEILLE - THIRD SHIRT 2017/2018

Marseille are France's most storied club, founded in 1899 and based in the Mediterranean port city. Nicknamed Les Phocéens (the Phocaeans, after the ancient Greeks who founded Marseille) and Les Olympiens (the Olympians), they play at the vast Stade Vélodrome. Their proudest boast: that famous 1993 European Cup triumph against Milan, when they became the first French club to lift the trophy.

The 2017/2018 season, during which this classy third shirt was worn, was a genuine revival under manager Rudi Garcia. Marseille finished fourth in Ligue 1 with 77 points (22 wins, 11 draws, 5 defeats) and 80 goals scored, comfortably their best league campaign in years and a return to European relevance in their 22nd consecutive top-flight season.

The real drama came in Europe. Marseille surged to the 2018 UEFA Europa League final, edging RB Leipzig and then Red Bull Salzburg, whom they beat 3-2 on aggregate after extra time in the semis. It was their first European final in 14 years, but Lyon brought heartbreak, a 0-3 defeat by Atlético Madrid, with talisman Dimitri Payet forced off in tears through injury inside the first half.

Florian Thauvin was the star turn, plundering 22 Ligue 1 goals and 25 in all competitions, bettered only by PSG's Edinson Cavani in the French top flight. Valère Germain chipped in with nine league goals, while Payet, Luiz Gustavo and veteran goalkeeper Steve Mandanda anchored a side that thrilled the Vélodrome. Greek striker Kostas Mitroglou and defender Adil Rami featured heavily too.
