MONACO - HOME SHIRT 2018/2019

AS Monaco were founded in 1924 and play in the Principality of Monaco, the tiny sovereign state tucked into the French Riviera. Les Rouge et Blanc (The Red and Whites) call the Stade Louis II in the Fontvieille district home, and hold a curious distinction in European football: they are the only club from outside France permitted to compete in Ligue 1.

The 2018/2019 season, during which this iconic red and white diagonal home shirt was worn, was one the Monégasques would rather forget. Having finished runners-up the previous year, the club endured extraordinary upheaval in the dugout. Leonardo Jardim was sacked in October and replaced by club legend Thierry Henry in his first managerial job, only for Henry to be suspended and then dismissed in January, with Jardim swiftly reinstated. Monaco limped to 17th in Ligue 1 on 36 points, avoiding the relegation playoff by just five points over 18th-placed Toulouse.

There was little relief in the cups. Drawn into a daunting Champions League group alongside Borussia Dortmund, Atlético Madrid and Club Brugge, Monaco propped up the table with a single point and were eliminated before Christmas. Their domestic cup runs offered brief distraction rather than genuine hope, with the fight for top-flight survival consuming the campaign from first whistle to last.

Amid the chaos, Radamel Falcao carried the team almost single-handedly. The veteran Colombian striker top scored with 16 goals across all competitions, 15 of them in Ligue 1, a remarkable haul for a side that spent the season staring at the drop. His goals, as much as anything, were the difference between survival and disaster for a club that had reached the Champions League semi-finals only two years earlier.
