MVV MAASTRICHT - HOME SHIRT 2016/2017
MVV Maastricht, founded on 2 April 1902, are a professional football club from the southern Dutch city of Maastricht in the province of Limburg. Known as De Sterrendragers ("The Star-bearers") for the stars on the crest drawn from the Maastricht coat of arms. They have played at the Stadion De Geusselt since 1962. Once a permanent fixture in the Dutch top flight, MVV have been a second-tier side since their relegation from the Eredivisie in 2000.
The 2016/2017 campaign, in which this classy home shirt was worn, was one of the brightest in MVV's recent history. Under long-serving manager Ron Elsen, the club mounted a serious push for a return to the Eredivisie via the Eerste Divisie promotion play-offs, eventually reaching the final round, where they faced fellow Limburg side Roda JC Kerkrade for a place in the top flight.
The two-legged final was a heartbreakingly tight affair. A goalless draw at De Geusselt on 25 May left everything to play for in Kerkrade three days later, but a single Roda goal in the 26th minute on 28 May was enough to settle the tie 1-0 on aggregate and send the cross-town rivals up. The KNVB Cup, meanwhile, brought only a brief run before elimination on penalties.
Versatile attacker Joeri Schroyen was the standout performer, chipping in with 9 goals and 11 assists from midfield and being voted MVV's Player of the Season for his troubles.
