NEW YORK RED BULLS – HOME SHIRT 2016
The New York Red Bulls are a professional football club based in Harrison, New Jersey, competing in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS), the top tier of football in the United States. Founded in 1994 as the MetroStars and rebranded in 2006 following their purchase by Red Bull GmbH, the club has been a consistent presence in MLS. The Red Bulls contest the Hudson River Derby against New York City FC, one of the league’s most high-profile rivalries. The team plays home matches at Red Bull Arena, a 25,000-seat stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, widely regarded as one of the premier football-specific venues in North America.
The club are perhaps most well known for having the legendary Thierry Henry play for them from 2011-2014 after signing from Barcelona. Henry recorded at least 1 goal contribution a game for his first 25 appearances for the club! Henry played alongside Australian legend Tim Cahill and also Bradley Wright-Phillips (Ian Wright's son) for 2 seasons and ran riot in the League!
During the 2016 season, New York Red Bulls wore this iconic home shirt, featuring the club’s traditional red and white design with the bold Red Bull branding across the chest. Under head coach Jesse Marsch, who went on to coach RB Leipzig, Leeds United and the Canadian national team, the team delivered a strong campaign, finishing first in the Eastern Conference and third overall in MLS during the regular season. They recorded 16 wins, 9 draws, and 9 losses, scoring 61 goals and conceding 44.
Offensively, Bradley Wright-Phillips led the charge, finishing as the club’s top scorer with 25 goals in MLS play. Supporting him were key players such as Sacha Kljestan, and young homegrown talents including Sean Davis and Tyler Adams, who would go on to become one of the club’s most prominent academy graduates. In the Playoffs, New York Red Bulls advanced to the Quarter-Finals, but were eliminated by Montreal Impact.
