SC CAMBUUR - HOME SHIRT 2008/2009

SC Cambuur were founded on 19 June 1964 in Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland. They are known as de geel-blauwen (the Yellow-Blues) for their yellow shirts and blue shorts, colours drawn from the coat of arms of the Cammingha family whose heraldic lions still feature on the club crest. In this era they played at the atmospheric Cambuur Stadion and contested the fiercely local Friese Derby against neighbours sc Heerenveen.

The 2008/2009 season, during which this eye-catching home shirt was worn, was a strong one. Cambuur finished 3rd in the Eerste Divisie on 69 points (20 wins, 9 draws, 9 defeats), booking a place in the promotion play-offs. Jurrie Koolhof began the campaign in the dugout but was replaced in September 2008 by former Ajax goalkeeper Stanley Menzo, who steered the club through the run-in.

The play-offs delivered both joy and heartbreak. Cambuur saw off FC Zwolle 6-3 on aggregate to reach a decisive tie with Eredivisie side Roda JC. After three tight legs finishing 0-0, 1-1 and 2-2, Roda edged the penalty shoot-out 3-1 to break Frisian hearts and deny Cambuur promotion to the top flight.

Ruud ter Heide led the scoring with 14 league goals in a productive front line. Cambuur were also the best-supported club in the division, drawing an average of 7,887 to the Cambuur Stadion, comfortably the highest in the Eerste Divisie and proof of the passionate backing that has long defined the club.
