Serbia are governed by the Football Association of Serbia (Fudbalski savez Srbije), and have competed as an independent nation since 2006, following the split from Montenegro. Nicknamed the Orlovi (the Eagles), they wear a white double-headed eagle on their crest and most often play home matches at Belgrade's Rajko Mitić Stadium, known to locals as the Marakana. Their support is among the most passionate in the Balkans.

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa, for which this striking away shirt was produced, was Serbia's first as a standalone nation, reached under experienced coach Radomir Antić after topping a qualifying group that included France. In the tournament itself, though, Serbia went out at the group stage, finishing third in Group D behind Germany and Ghana.

Their campaign hinged on three tight games. Serbia opened with a 1-0 loss to Ghana, undone by a late Asamoah Gyan penalty. They then pulled off the shock of the group, beating a Germany side reduced to ten men 1-0 through Milan Jovanović. A 2-1 defeat by Australia in the finale, despite Marko Pantelić's goal, sent them home.

Serbia's two tournament goals were shared by Jovanović and Pantelić. The squad brimmed with quality: Manchester United's Nemanja Vidić and Chelsea's Branislav Ivanović in defence, winger Miloš Krasić and striker Nikola Žigić up top, and captain Dejan Stanković in midfield. Stanković made history in South Africa, becoming the first player to appear at World Cups for three different nations, having previously represented FR Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro.
