La Roja (The Red One) represent one of international football's greatest modern dynasties. Based in Madrid, Spain's national team is renowned for its elegant, possession-based style and its extraordinary era of dominance from 2008 to 2012.
This smart home shirt was worn throughout 2016, including at UEFA Euro 2016 in France. The design featured Spain's classic red base with subtle yellow accents on the crest and trim, channelling the colours of the Spanish flag.
At Euro 2016, La Roja arrived in France as back-to-back reigning European champions, having lifted the trophy in both 2008 and 2012. Under head coach Vicente del Bosque, Spain topped Group D briefly before stumbling - opening with a 1-0 win over the Czech Republic and thumping Turkey 3-0 before suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat to Croatia on the final matchday that sent them into the tougher route through the knockouts. In the round of 16 in Saint-Denis they were knocked out 2-0 by eventual finalists Italy, with Giorgio Chiellini and Graziano Pellè scoring the goals that brought the curtain down on Spain's golden-generation era at international tournaments.
The tournament saw a young Álvaro Morata emerge as Spain's frontline option, scoring three goals across the group stage. Andrés Iniesta remained the central creative force, while captain Sergio Ramos and Gerard Piqué anchored a defence that conceded just three goals across the campaign. The Italy defeat marked the end of an era for Spanish football - Del Bosque departed after the tournament, drawing the curtain on the cycle that had brought two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup.
As of 2026, Spain will be hoping to emulate 2008 and 2010 where they won the Euros followed by the World Cup - and they are well placed to do so. They've been drawn in a favourable group - Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, and Cape Verde alongside themselves. Their young squad from 2024 has developed and are ready to strike on the World stage this time.
