SWITZERLAND - HOME SHIRT 2008

Switzerland's national team are one of European football's most consistently competitive sides, representing a famously multilingual nation whose football identity has long been built on discipline, organisation and unshakeable team spirit. Affectionately known as the Nati, Switzerland have reached the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals on three occasions (1934, 1938, and as hosts in 1954) and the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.

This legacy has been shaped by legendary figures such as Stéphane Chapuisat - the 1990s talisman and 1997 Champions League winner with Borussia Dortmund - Karl Rappan, Alexander Frei, Köbi Kuhn, and modern captain Granit Xhaka, whose brilliance has defined Swiss football across generations.

Switzerland wore this iconic home shirt at UEFA Euro 2008, the tournament they co-hosted with neighbouring Austria under legendary manager Köbi Kuhn. Drawn into Group A alongside the Czech Republic, Portugal and Turkey, the Nati's tournament was scarred from the opening minutes when captain and talisman Alexander Frei limped off in tears with a serious knee injury during the opening game - a 1-0 defeat to the Czechs in Basel settled by a late Libor Sionko strike. A heavy-rain 2-1 defeat to Turkey followed at the same Basel ground - Hakan Yakin opening the scoring before Semih Şentürk and Arda Turan turned the game on its head - leaving Switzerland eliminated from their home tournament with a game to spare. The closing dead-rubber match produced a moment of pride, however: a 2-0 victory over Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal courtesy of a Hakan Yakin free kick and a Tranquillo Barnetta strike, sending Köbi Kuhn into international retirement with a rare smile.

As of 2026, the Nati are preparing for their next chapter at the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, drawn into Group B alongside co-hosts Canada, Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina. With a squad built around captain Granit Xhaka - heading to his fourth consecutive World Cup - Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji, Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer and forward Breel Embolo, Switzerland travel to North America under manager Murat Yakin aiming to match or improve on their best-ever World Cup finish.
