AJAX - HOME SHIRT 2025/2026

Founded in 1900 in Amsterdam, Ajax are one of European football's great institutions, known to their faithful as de Godenzonen (the Sons of Gods) and, fondly, as Lucky Ajax. They play at the Johan Cruyff Arena, renamed in 2018 in honour of their most famous son, and their legendary De Toekomst academy remains a byword for the Total Football heritage that reshaped the sport. A nice touch for the pub quiz: the club take their name from the Greek mythological hero Ajax.

The 2025/2026 campaign was one of real turbulence. John Heitinga began the season in charge but departed on 6 November 2025 after a wretched run, with Fred Grim stepping in as caretaker before Óscar García took the reins in March 2026. This iconic home shirt, with its broad red central stripe on crisp white, framed a difficult league year: Ajax eventually finished fifth in the Eredivisie on 56 points, well adrift of the title race they had hoped to contest.

Europe proved painful. In the Champions League league phase Ajax won just two of eight matches, finishing 32nd of 36 and tumbling out early, with chastening defeats to Inter and a 3-0 home loss to Galatasaray hastening Heitinga's exit. Their KNVB Cup run was brief but eventful: a thumping 7-2 win away at Excelsior was followed by a 0-6 collapse at AZ in the round of 16.

Amid the gloom, Mika Godts was a genuine bright spark, the Belgian finishing as top scorer with 17 goals and adding a remarkable 15 assists. Big summer business saw Jorrel Hato sold to Chelsea for over 44 million euros and Brian Brobbey leave for Sunderland, while Oscar Gloukh arrived to add creativity and Oleksandr Zinchenko joined from Arsenal in January. Ajax did at least win the European play-offs to salvage continental football.
