La Albiceleste swept through Group B with three wins from three: 1-0 over Nigeria, 4-1 over South Korea (Gonzalo Higuaín hat-trick) and 2-0 over Greece. They edged Mexico 3-1 in the round of 16 - a tie remembered for Carlos Tévez's controversial offside opener - before the dream came to a chastening end at the quarter-final stage in Cape Town, where a ruthless Germany dismantled Argentina 4-0 and sent Maradona out of the tournament in tears. Higuaín finished as the team's top scorer with four goals, though a fresh-faced Lionel Messi - the reigning Ballon d'Or holder - could not find the net across his five matches. Maradona stepped down soon after the tournament, closing a brief but unforgettable spell at the helm.
As of 2026, Argentina remain one of the dominant forces in international football. With a core of world-class players such as Lionel Messi, Julián Álvarez, Enzo Fernández, and Lautaro Martínez, La Albiceleste continue to compete at the highest level and are once again among the favourites for the next FIFA World Cup.
