BARCELONA – HOME SHIRT 2011/2012
FC Barcelona are one of the most iconic and successful football clubs in the world. Based in Barcelona, they play their home matches at the legendary Camp Nou - Europe’s largest stadium. The club competes in La Liga, the top tier of Spanish football, and is renowned for its long tradition of attractive, possession-based football and global support.
This home shirt, manufactured by Nike, was worn during the 2011/2012 season, a campaign that combined major success with a number of near-misses. The kit featured Barcelona’s traditional red and blue vertical stripes.
On the pitch, Barcelona enjoyed a strong but ultimately mixed season. Under manager Pep Guardiola, the team finished 2nd in La Liga, nine points behind rivals Real Madrid, who recorded a then-record 100-point season. Barcelona did secure several major trophies though, winning the Copa del Rey after a 3–0 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the final, as well as lifting the Supercopa de España, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.
In the UEFA Champions League, Barcelona reached the semi-finals, where they were eliminated by Chelsea, who went on to win the competition in dramatic fashion. At the end of the season, Guardiola stepped down as head coach, bringing to an end one of the most successful managerial eras in the club’s history.
The 2011/2012 season is forever associated with Lionel Messi, who enjoyed quite possibly the greatest individual years in football history. Wearing this iconic home shirt, Messi scored an astonishing 73 goals in all competitions and, later in 2012, went on to break the record for the most goals scored in a calendar year, finishing with an astounding 91 goals.
