FC Bayern München is Germany's most successful and most widely supported football club, based in Munich, Bavaria.
Founded in 1900, Bayern have won a record number of German championships and are one of the most recognisable clubs in world football. Their rise to continental dominance saw them win the European Cup on three occasions going into the 1999 final, with their storied squad of the late 1990s widely considered one of the finest Germany has ever produced - featuring the likes of Oliver Kahn, Stefan Effenberg, Lothar Matthäus, Mehmet Scholl, and Mario Basler.
Bayern wore this away shirt in one of the most dramatic and heartbreaking seasons in their history. Under coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, Bayern won the Bundesliga title and reached the DFB-Pokal final, putting them on the brink of an historic German treble. In European football they marched to the Champions League final in Barcelona, beating 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the quarter-finals and Dynamo Kyiv in the semi-finals. Mario Basler's free kick after just six minutes gave Bayern the lead, and they went on to hit both the post and the crossbar as the match seemed all but won. Then, in the cruellest of endings, injury time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær cancelled out Bayern's lead, handing Manchester United a 2–1 win and denying Bayern the most coveted prize in European club football. Bayern then went on to lose the DFB-Pokal final on penalties to Werder Bremen.
The away shirt features a white and red base with navy blue accents. The iconic Opel sponsor logo appears in bold black lettering across the front. The shirt was manufactured by Adidas. It's one of the most iconic kits in German football history - worn during a season that came agonisingly close to greatness and has never been forgotten.
