Belgium's national team are one of European football's most exciting modern sides, representing a footballing nation whose so-called "golden generation" has captured the imagination of fans around the world over the past decade. Known to fans as the Red Devils (or Les Diables Rouges in French and De Rode Duivels in Dutch), Belgium reached the FIFA World Cup semi-finals in 1986 and went one better at Russia 2018, finishing third with a famous quarter-final victory over Brazil along the way.
This legacy has been shaped by legendary figures such as Enzo Scifo, Vincent Kompany, Eden Hazard, and Romelu Lukaku, whose brilliance has defined Belgian football across generations.
Belgium wore this striking away shirt throughout 2021, the year UEFA Euro 2020 was finally played following its COVID-19 postponement. Under Spanish manager Roberto Martínez and arriving as FIFA's top-ranked team in the world, the Red Devils swept Group B with three wins from three - 3-0 over Russia in Saint Petersburg (a Romelu Lukaku brace and Meunier's goal), 2-1 over Denmark in Copenhagen (Hazard and De Bruyne), and 2-0 over Finland. The round of 16 produced a famous result in Seville, Thorgan Hazard's stunning 42nd-minute long-range strike settling a 1-0 victory over reigning champions Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo. The dream ended in the quarter-finals at the Allianz Arena in Munich, however, where eventual champions Italy edged a thrilling encounter 2-1 - Nicolò Barella and Lorenzo Insigne goals giving the Azzurri a 2-0 lead before Romelu Lukaku pulled one back from the penalty spot, but Belgium could not find the equaliser.
As of 2026, Belgium are heading to the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico under new French manager Rudi Garcia, who took charge in January 2025 in his first international role. Drawn into Group G alongside Egypt, Iran and New Zealand, the Red Devils have a favourable opening to the tournament. With a squad still built around 34-year-old captain Kevin De Bruyne, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and all-time leading scorer Romelu Lukaku, alongside the next wave in Jeremy Doku and Amadou Onana, Les Diables Rouges travel to North America hungry to convert their famed talent into silverware at last.
