BESIKTAS - THIRD SHIRT 2018/2019
Beşiktaş were founded in 1903 and are based in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul, on the European bank of the Bosphorus. Kara Kartallar (The Black Eagles) play their home matches at Vodafone Park and are one of Turkey's fabled 'big three' alongside Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe. The 2018/2019 campaign marked the club's 115th year since its foundation.
The 2018/2019 season, during which this striking third shirt was worn, saw Beşiktaş finish 3rd in the Süper Lig under Şenol Güneş, closing on 65 points, four adrift of champions Galatasaray and two behind runners-up İstanbul Başakşehir. The campaign carried a strange footnote: the club were banned from the Turkish Cup after refusing to complete an abandoned semi-final against Fenerbahçe, a match halted the previous spring when Güneş was struck on the head by an object thrown from the crowd.
Europe offered the season's biggest nights. Beşiktaş came through the Europa League qualifying rounds and into a group with Genk, Malmö and Sarpsborg 08. They finished third in the section on seven points, however, and dropped out of the competition before the knockout rounds could begin.
January signing Burak Yılmaz top scored with 11 league goals after arriving from Trabzonspor, with Serbian forward Adem Ljajić close behind on nine and young striker Güven Yalçın weighing in with eight. The squad had genuine star quality: Loris Karius kept goal on loan from Liverpool, Portuguese defender Pepe departed mid-season for Porto, and Japan's Shinji Kagawa arrived on loan from Borussia Dortmund in the winter window.
