BORDEAUX - AWAY SHIRT 2017/2018
FC Girondins de Bordeaux are one of the great historic names of French football, founded in 1881 in the south-western capital of the Gironde region. Known to fans as Les Girondins and often referred to as Les Marine et Blanc for their famous navy-and-white colours, Bordeaux play their home matches at the 42,000-capacity Matmut Atlantique, the modern arena that has been their home since 2015. Six Ligue 1 titles (1950, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1999 and 2009) sit in the trophy cabinet, alongside a rich heritage that has produced legends including Alain Giresse, Zinedine Zidane and Bixente Lizarazu.
The 2017/2018 campaign - during which this striking away shirt was worn - was the club's 137th professional season and one of considerable turmoil. Jocelyn Gourvennec had started the season in charge but was dismissed on 18 January 2018 after a run of poor results including a Coupe de France exit to fifth-tier US Granville. Uruguayan Gus Poyet was appointed two days later, immediately overseeing a statement 3-1 home victory over Lyon and gradually steadying Les Girondins into a mid-table climb.
The season also brought early European heartbreak. Bordeaux's UEFA Europa League adventure ended before the group stage with a third qualifying round exit to Hungarian side Videoton in late July, and a Coupe de la Ligue last-16 exit to Toulouse followed in the domestic winter. Under Poyet, however, the Ligue 1 climb continued through the spring, with a 4-0 home rout of Metz on the final day sealing a 6th-place finish on 55 points and a return to Europa League football for 2018/2019.
The season's brightest light was 20-year-old Brazilian winger Malcom, whose 12 Ligue 1 goals from wide areas made him the club's top scorer and one of Europe's most talked-about young forwards - a summer transfer saga would follow, ending with a move to Barcelona in 2018. Beneath him, teenage academy prospects Aurélien Tchouaméni and Jules Koundé began to make their first professional appearances - two names that would soon travel far beyond the Matmut Atlantique.
