ATLÉTICO MINEIRO - HOME SHIRT 2022
Clube Atlético Mineiro were founded on 25 March 1908 by a group of students in Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais. Known universally as Galo (The Rooster), a nickname reflected in their much-loved mascot, they played their 2022 home football at the great Mineirão, their Arena MRV not yet open. The club have won the Campeonato Mineiro a record 50 times, a testament to their standing as a genuine people's club.
The 2022 season, during which this striking home shirt was worn, was one of transition. Defending Série A champions, Atlético endured an unsettled year in the dugout: Antonio "El Turco" Mohamed was dismissed in July, and the returning Cuca took charge for the run-in. In the league they slipped to seventh place with 58 points from 38 games, a disappointing defence of their crown.
The cup competitions offered brighter moments. Atlético lifted the Campeonato Mineiro, beating fierce rivals Cruzeiro 3-1 in the final, and claimed the Supercopa do Brasil, edging Flamengo on penalties after a 2-2 draw. In the Copa Libertadores they reached the quarter-finals before Palmeiras ended their hopes, while Flamengo knocked them out of the Copa do Brasil in the last 16.
Hulk was the talismanic figure, the powerful forward plundering 29 goals across all competitions, including 12 in the league and 10 in the state championship. His penalties and thunderous strikes made him the focal point of everything good about Atlético's year, a fearsome presence leading the line.
