FAGIANO OKAYAMA - HOME SHIRT 2025

Fagiano Okayama are the standard-bearers for Okayama, the castle city on the shores of the Seto Inland Sea, with the club in its modern form taking shape in 2004. The name is wonderful: fagiano is Italian for pheasant, a nod to the loyal bird who marches alongside Momotaro, the peach-born boy of local folklore, and their mascot Fagimaru is modelled on Japan's native green pheasant. They play at the JFE Harenokuni Stadium and count neighbours Sanfrecce Hiroshima as their fiercest rivals in the so-called Chugoku derby.

The 2025 season is the one Okayama had waited their entire history for. After finishing fifth in J2 the previous year and winning the play-offs with a 2-0 final defeat of Vegalta Sendai, they reached the J1 League for the very first time, ending a sixteen-year stay in the second tier, during which this celebratory home shirt was worn. Survival was the only realistic aim for the newcomers, and under long-serving manager Takashi Kiyama they delivered it, eventually finishing thirteenth of twenty with 45 points.

For a club that had spent its whole existence outside the elite, simply testing itself against the giants of the J1 was the reward. Okayama held their own with a modest budget and a squad built largely on unglamorous graft, steering clear of the relegation scrap and consolidating in the top flight at the first attempt.

The goals came by committee rather than through one talisman, which said much about the collective effort. Ataru Esaka led the way as the club's top scorer with six league goals, closely followed by the likes of Ryunosuke Sato, Lucao and Takaya Kimura on five apiece. It was a spread of contributions that reflected a well-drilled, hard-running side punching above its weight.
