FC NANTES – HOME SHIRT 2008/2009
FC Nantes, known as Les Canaris (The Canaries), are a professional football club based in Nantes in the Pays de la Loire region of western France, competing in Ligue 1. Founded in 1943 through the merger of five local clubs, Nantes are one of the most storied institutions in French football, having won eight league titles and four Coupe de France trophies. The club plays its home matches at the Stade de la Beaujoire and is famed for its philosophy of jeu à la nantaise - a fluid, collective style of play developed under coach José Arribas in the 1960s that shaped the club's identity for generations and produced some of France's finest players, including Marcel Desailly, Didier Deschamps, and Claude Makélélé.
This 2008/2009 home shirt was manufactured by Kappa and worn in the club's traditional yellow - the colour that earned them their canary nickname. It was a shirt that carried real significance: Nantes were returning to Ligue 1 after a season's absence, having been relegated from the top flight for the first time in 44 years back in 2007.
The campaign generated considerable optimism ahead of kick-off, particularly following the high-profile signing of Croatian striker Ivan Klasnić, a proven goalscorer at Werder Bremen who had remarkably returned to professional football after undergoing a kidney transplant in 2007. Klasnić finished as joint top scorer alongside Malian forward Mamadou Bagayoko, with both men contributing seven goals apiece.
Despite the optimism, the campaign ended in immediate relegation. Nantes finished 19th, accumulating 37 points from nine wins across 38 matches and conceding 54 goals - one of the worst defensive records in the division. This was a second fall from the top flight in the space of two seasons in it and began a four-year spell in Ligue 2 that ended in 2013.
