Germany’s national team are one of international football’s true giants, representing a nation with an unparalleled footballing pedigree. Die Mannschaft have consistently set the benchmark on the world stage, winning four FIFA World Cups (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014) and three UEFA European Championships (1972, 1980, 1996).
This formidable legacy has been shaped by legendary figures such as Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Lothar Matthäus, Oliver Kahn, and Miroslav Klose. Klose remains the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, while Matthäus holds the record for most minutes played in the tournament. Beckenbauer, arguably the nation’s most iconic football figure, famously lifted the World Cup both as a player and later as a manager, cementing his place in football history.
After the disappointment of EURO 2004, a new era began to take shape under Jürgen Klinsmann, with a renewed emphasis on attacking football and youthful energy ahead of a home World Cup.
Germany took to the pitch in this dynamic away shirt during their 2006 campaign, wearing it at the 2006 FIFA World Cup on home soil. Hosting the tournament brought immense expectation, but also a sense of optimism as a new generation - including Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Lukas Podolski - emerged to support established stars.
The 2006 World Cup became known as the “Sommermärchen” (Summer Fairytale). Germany thrilled the home crowd with an attacking brand of football, topping their group before defeating Sweden in the Round of 16 and Argentina in a dramatic quarter-final decided on penalties. Their run was halted in the semi-finals by eventual champions Italy after extra time, but victory over Portugal in the third-place play-off secured a proud bronze-medal finish and restored belief in the national team’s future.
As of 2026, Germany have already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup and have been drawn into a group alongside Curacao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador. Die Mannschaft will be aiming to assert their authority from the outset and set themselves up for a deep run in North America, led by players such as Nico Schlotterbeck, Florian Wirtz, and Joshua Kimmich.
