WERDER BREMEN - HOME SHIRT 2017/2018
SV Werder Bremen are one of the great historic names of German football, founded on 4 February 1899 in the northern port city of Bremen. Known to fans as Die Werderaner or simply Die Grün-Weißen ("The Green and Whites") for their famous green home colours, Werder play their home matches at the 42,100-capacity Weserstadion, the atmospheric ground on the banks of the River Weser that has been their home since 1909. Werder sit on a formidable trophy cabinet - four Bundesliga titles (1965, 1988, 1993 and 2004), six DFB-Pokals and the 1992 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup - and are one of only three clubs, alongside Bayern Munich and Hamburg, to have spent more than half a century in the top flight of German football.
The 2017/2018 campaign - during which this striking home shirt was worn - was the club's 119th season in existence, their 37th consecutive Bundesliga campaign and one of the most dramatic in recent memory. Werder made a disastrous start under head coach Alexander Nouri, where they didn't win until November! As a result, they were entrenched in a relegation battle. On 30 October 2017, with the club anchored to the foot of the table, Nouri was dismissed and 35-year-old academy graduate Florian Kohfeldt - previously head of the club's under-23s - was appointed interim head coach before being confirmed permanently on 10 November.
What followed was one of the great turnaround stories of the Bundesliga season. Kohfeldt's fresh, high-pressing football lifted a squad built around captain Max Kruse (the top scorer of the year), Danish midfielder Thomas Delaney, Algerian forward Ishak Belfodil and reliable Czech goalkeeper Jiří Pavlenka. Werder climbed steadily out of the bottom half and finished the campaign in a hugely respectable 11th place - a remarkable recovery from the depths of relegation trouble at Christmas.
